The Martian
During a mission in Mars, a team of astronauts are unexpectedly hit with a violent storm that forces them to evacuate and abort the mission, during the storm, one of the astronauts (Mark Watney) is hit by a piece of debris and is thought to be dead by his team. Unknowingly to his team, Watney is alive and is forced to use his skills as a botanist to self sustain himself until help is sent to him.
Review
In a time where movie genres are saturated with the same styles and themes, Riddley Scott's The Martian attempts to break the barriers of a generic space movie and still be a box office hit. Has Scott successfully executed this? Yes. The Martian has an excellent blend of space themes and successfully put its own twist on itself by incorporating real themes regarding science and space. Although some aspects of the film may not be 100% accurate, it is enough for the major audience to appreciate whilst watching the film. Due to the fact that Watney (Matt Damon) is trapped on Mars, the sense of claustrophobia is present even though the film presents itself to span over multiple years. We are so used to space movies involving aliens and sci-fi elements, it is refreshing to see Damon simply by himself trying to survive, his weapons of survival being his skills of botany and the will to survive. Damon brings the audience with him through a journey of ups and downs as he pushes himself mentally to make it through his time on Mars. One nitpick I had with the movie was that even though Watney is an experienced astronaut, the movie was seen to brush over the fact that he was literally the only person on the planet, even to an experienced astronaut, anybody by themselves on Mars would have felt mental trauma and extreme stress, Watney is seen to almost act like he has been in the same situation before, maybe the fact that the movie was set over multiple years but the audience only being shown a few hours had something to do with it. Regardless, the film itself is a extremely refreshing take on generic space films and has proven to the rest of the industry that incorporating new ideas into their films can bring great success.
Overall, The Martian is a must watch for all audiences, it is a fantastic take on what the first steps for colonizing Mars would look like.
