Elysium: Film Review

Elysium

2 classes of people exist in the year 2154, the rich and privileged who live on the space station Elysium and the poor who live on the overpopulated and ruined Earth. Max can be the bridge that gaps the poor and the rich, but he has to power through Elysium government to succeed.

Review

Neil Blomkamp's Elysium is a sci-fi action film that see's Max (Matt Damon) attempting to bridge the gap between wealthy and poor through acts of terrorism against the Elysium government. The characters in the film are unfortunately quite unmemorable as they are all quite stale and cliche, they are hard to get emotionally attached to due to this. Visually though, the film is amazing, the excellent CGI effects with the cinematography creates an amazing environment, the contrast between the gritty and ruined earth and the sleek and futuristic space station prove this point. Similarly to the characters, the story is seen to be gradually saturated throughout the film through action sequences which is a shame since the main story of social and economic gap was the main reason why Max wanted to bridge the gap. I see Elysium as District 9 if it were an action movie, unlike District 9, Elysium does not tackle the social and economic issues introduced first in the film. There is not too much complexity in the story of characters but the gap is filled with great action scenes. Even the ending scene was too predicable and too simplistic.

All in all, Elysium is a great movie but could of been a lot better, if they had invested more time into the backstory and main issues of the situation on earth the film may have been more compelling and complex.
